About

Julio Fonyat photographs weddings, engagements and families across San Diego from a base in Carlsbad, working close in and with very little direction.

Approach

I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, in a family that never really stopped looking at pictures. My father and my grandfather were photographers and architects, my mother collected art, and at fifteen I was handed my father's cameras. I moved to San Diego in 2002 to photograph for a living, and I have been here since.

The work sits somewhere between photojournalism and portraiture. Most of a wedding day is left alone and simply followed, so what ends up in the gallery is what actually happened rather than what was arranged for the camera. When I do step in, it is briefly, for the light or for a frame that will not build itself.

Before weddings it was surf photography, shot from the water and published in the surf magazines, and in 2012 I spent four months driving through fourteen countries with a camera. Both taught me the same thing: get close, stay patient, and wait for it. I work in Portuguese, Spanish and English, across San Diego, La Jolla, Carlsbad, Temecula, and travel for weddings anywhere they take me.
